Cheap Motorcycles

Some people are hesitant to buy a cheap motorcycle because they fear it’s of poor quality. But the fact is that many of these models are in good condition. Even some new models are being sold cheaply due to competition.

What Type of Bike are You Looking for?

There are thousands of different motorcycles out there. Are you looking for a large road hugging bike? Or do you prefer something more compact? Are you looking for specific types (with a make, model and year) or just looking for an affordable motorcycle?

Are you going to use the bike daily or only for recreational activities on the weekends? Think about these questions first before you start looking.

Where to Look for Affordable Motorcycles

Visit the dealers in the neighborhood. There could be sales ongoing. It is also a good idea to read motorcycle magazines and publications. Bike sales will usually be published here first. Of course there is always the Internet.

You have several options here. There are several online databases of cheap bikes for sale. These sites will have popular brand name motorcycles included. You can also try online classifieds and auction sites.

Reminders for Online Buyers

Make sure you understand the site’s return policy in case the bike is not in good condition. If the bike is located far away, the shipping costs will go up. If you are buying a used and cheap motorcycle, read the product description in its entirety. Contact the seller and ask for any further details if necessary.

Buying from Dealers

Negotiate for the price. The bike may be cheap, but there’s no harm in trying to lower the price even more. If the bike is used, bring a mechanic with you (no need for that if you know how to inspect a bike). If you see a defect or a worn out part, you can use this as leverage.

Buyers of old motorcycles should check the bike’s Carfax report. If it has been involved in an accident, chances are it will be listed there. For buyers of new but cheap bikes, try not to haggle too much. If the price is reasonable, buy it, or somebody else will.

Inspect the Motorcycle

If the bike will be used for recreational activities only, reliability will not be much of an issue. But if you will use it everyday, this will be critical. Look at the tires; make sure they don’t crack when inflated.

Make sure the bike has good balance (i.e., the wheels don’t wobble) and the engine does not leak. The throttle should move smoothly and cleanly. The front fork must be in good condition; no bends or fissures. Have all the components checked out. Do this only if you are qualified; otherwise, have a mechanic check it out.

Buying a cheap motorcycle can save you a lot of money. You can buy from a variety of sources, including the Net and local dealers. As long as the motorcycle components are up to par, it should be able to serve you for a good many years.
